In May the Newington Foundation launched New Grandies, our program especially for grandparents and family friends of Newington College students.
Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, a leading child psychologist, spoke about his latest book on grandparenting, that is full of sensible and sensitive advice on how to navigate the complex and rewarding relationship of being a grandparent. Michael shared that those children with engaged and supportive grandparents tend to have:
- improved academic performance
- fewer emotional problems
- less depression
- better behavioural development and social skills
- less parental stress, and
- stronger bonds with a more cohesive family.
Grandparents have always played such an integral role in the lives of their grandchildren, and in the fabric of Newington. Launching New Grandies, Michael Parker, Headmaster, reflected that grandparents are playing an increasingly larger role by sharing the drop offs, pick-ups, weekend sports, babysitting, attending music, drama and visual and performing arts concerts, cooking, advising, doing homework, and helping financially as well.
New Grandies offers activities that involve grandchildren, an annual morning tea, and a range of social and educational events targeted towards what grandparents and family friends want.
