With thanks from a scholarship student

05 Aug 2024

Each year we invite our scholarship students to write a letter of thanks. These letters enable each student to reflect with gratitude, the gift that they have received through the generosity of our community. Each letter, written in the students' own words, and is part of their personal journey at Newington.

We are pleased to share this letter with you from Preston Zhang (Le Couteur House). Preston wrote this letter at the end of last year. He is about to commence his trial examinations and we take this opportunity to wish him the very best.

“Without the incredible support of the Foundation, I would not be at Newington.

I was immensely honoured to have received the Phil Davis OAM Mathematics Scholarship in 2022, which has since allowed me to continue to experience and benefit from the incredible tutelage of the staff, sporting facilities, a wide range of extracurricular activities and the camaraderie of the boys at the College. In particular, I was able to extend and enrich my passion for mathematics, and successfully represented Newington at a range of mathematics competitions, including the UNSW Annual Mathematics Competition in which I was a prizewinner.

I am writing not only to express my sincere appreciation for the scholarship, but also gratitude for the support of the Foundation in establishing and maintaining a strong culture of mathematical excellence.

While I am now in the graduating cohort of 2024, it is exciting to witness the enthusiasm and endeavours of an emerging group of extremely talented younger students, to whom the Foundation has granted similar opportunities to experience the College in the form of academic and means-tested scholarships.

As I approach my final year at the College and the end of my secondary studies, I am proud that my legacy is one of reinforcing a firm tradition of curiosity and excellence.

For this, I reiterate and express in the strongest terms my gratitude for the Foundation. Thank you again for the incredible opportunity to attend Newington.
