At our Thank You evening held in November 2024, our guests heard from Keone, currently in Year 12, who is a recipient of the means-tested Mulford Scholarship. Keone shared with passion about his gift of a Newington education, through the generosity of others:
"Welcome. My name is Keone and I am of Samoan, Greek decent. I have been at the College since 2020, starting in year 7. I am a recipient of The Mulford Scholarship, which I am so grateful and proud of, as it represents diversity and inclusivity. I want to thank you all, as this scholarship and the Newington community has allowed me opportunities that I wouldn’t have had elsewhere. I never imagined I could be a part of such an incredible school. I quickly became a member of the College, and was grateful at how my teachers and my peers accepted me.
"Over the years Newington has allowed me to grow and experience so much. I have had great teachers that have challenged my views and helped me to think beyond my own world. My aim is to continue my studies after school as I have found a passion for learning, thanks to so many amazing teachers and experiences I’ve had at Newington. This to me is priceless.
"I have met many teachers who have not only helped me academically. I have become more worldly. I have developed so many skills that I use daily. They have been more than teachers to me, guiding me in so many ways.
"I have learnt how important kindness and caring for those less fortunate is.
"The charity and community work that I have been able to experience has been humbling and has kept me grounded. They have changed the way I not only perceive the world, but everyday strangers and individuals. I have learnt not to judge others based on the way they look or carry themselves. No one knows the hardships people are faced with and what they are going through. I have learnt how important kindness and caring for those less fortunate is.
"I have tried new sports like basketball and water polo, which have allowed me to develop new skills and, most importantly, meet new people ... which I am grateful for. Sports at Newington has taken me out of my comfort zone and forced me to try new things.
"As an only child, the mates I have made here are like my brothers. From chanting on the Johnson bank to watching my classmates perform in the drama theatre. Every one of them offers something different in our friendship. Their families have been accepting and loving towards my family and I. There is a bond between us, like no other. I know my Newington mates will continue to be a big part of my life moving forward.
"My family and I would like to thank you all so much for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the Newington community. The experiences and the memories I have made at school are life long. The opportunity you have provided me has taken me one step closer to achieving my dreams.
"I hope to be able give back and help other students achieve their goals just as you have helped me. I am forever grateful for this scholarship and all the support from the Foundation. Your work and contribution has changed my world. Thank you!”
